Returning for the 3rd year in a row, the Atomic Maverick 86 C is back for another round. While all other members of the Maverick series employ the use of metal laminates, the 86 C sets itself apart from the pack by enlisting carbon for its strength. Taking the same philosophies and theories from its closest sibling, the 86 C sheds an additional 100 grams per ski of weight as well as offers a softer, friendlier flex pattern in comparison to the Maverick 88 Ti. Which is beneficial for those who don’t ski specifically fast or are still honing their technique. While maintaining the capable nature of the Maverick line, the 86 C is an approachable option for a vast array of all ability types that are looking for an energetic ski with a lot of character. Because of this, it is the people’s ski and can be found in the quiver of both intermediate and advanced skiers alike.

With many similarities to the other Maverick ski, the 86 C uses a slightly different construction method. Sharing Atomic’s OMatic Core, DuraCap Sidewall, and HRZN tech, the 86 C sets itself apart by using a Carbon Backbone in place of metal laminates. The OMatic Core consists of a poplar wood core and two fiberglass laminates. In-layed into the OMatic core, is an ultra-lightweight carbon insert that runs the entire length of the ski to act as a stabilizing backbone. Making the Maverick 86 C even more lightweight than the surprisingly light Ti models. The carbon backbone does wonders for energy and pop when going at slower speeds compared to the other Ti models, making it a great choice for people looking for a ski to progress with or to enjoy the more relaxed side of skiing. HRZN tech in the tips nods to the Maverick 86 C’s soft snow performance, adding even more value to its versatility and suitable audience.

The Maverick 86 C’s shape and sidecut is telling of its frontside focus, narrow enough for precise turning yet wide enough to accommodate softer snow. Starting with the overall profile of the ski, the 86 C has 15% tip rocker, 75% camber, and 10% tail rocker like the 88 Ti. The profile is indicative of a long effective edge emphasizing on trail performance with off trail capabilities. There is significant splay in the tips that permits off-trail adventuring but on-trail is where this ski will like to be. As for the sidecut of the 176cm length, the 86 C will have 124.5mm tip, 86mm waist, and 109.5mm tail which generates an 18.2-meter turn radius. This is quite long for a ski in this genre, but it works for how this ski likes to be skied. This Maverick is most happy when skied at medium speeds and turn radii in a controlled manner. Stability decreases with higher speeds and firmer snow but is still going to get the job done.

Less aggressive skiers of all abilities who are looking for a highly versatile ski that is not too taxing, but still highly performing, will thoroughly enjoy the Maverick 86 C. Its lightweight OMatic Core and Carbon Backbone result in a ski that is both nimble but incredibly stable. Many skiers out there want to have the best and baddest ski without taking into consideration their true skiing style. When in reality they would be better off with something like the Maverick 86 C due to its approachable and versatile nature.
