2024 BLIZZARD THUNDERBIRD SPORT TI SKIS W/ TPX 12 BINDINGS
The 2024 Blizzard Thunderbird Sport Ti gets a bit of a facelift and a name change for this year, but remains the same groomer-slayer that it was last year with the R14 moniker. We’ve found over the years that there’s a whole lot of usefulness for skis like this, especially if you ski in a place that has a lot of groomers and firmer snow. This rings especially true for us here in Vermont—so many days out of the year are on the crunch side, and having a ski that excels in that realm is very important. Our big takeaway is that most people are on skis that are just too wide, keeping them from fully enjoying their ski day. The Thunderbird Sport Ti is a crisply turning ski with a high end feel and finish—perfect for advanced skiers who are looking to make powerful and stable turns on the groomers while also keeping some adventure available in an all-mountain format.
With a nice build quality including Blizzard’s True Blend Piste wood core, the Thunderbird Sport Ti has a sophisticated and thought-out feel. By placing 11 dense and sturdy beech stringers in the central portion of the ski with 3 poplar blocks surrounding it, the Sport Ti has more stiffness and power in the underfoot and central regions of the ski while the ends along the sides are more maneuverable and agile with the poplar. The ski also includes a wide titanal beam in the underfoot zone extending a bit towards the tips and tails. This lines up with the sidewall portion of the ski, providing fantastic grip and strength in the underfoot zone while the tips and tails that are mainly capped are lighter and more maneuverable. While you may think that this will take away from performance, it’s hardly noticeable. In the 170 cm length, the ski hits the scale without binding or plate at 1660 grams. This is on the lighter side, especially for something this stable.

At 76 mm underfoot in the 170, the Sport Ti has a great shape for all-mountain cruising. It’s wide enough to provide a nice balance point to stand on while at the same time, it’s plenty narrow to generate a tremendous amount of torsional stiffness and edge grip. That makes for a fun-loving and well-rounded turn shape and style, with the 170 registering a 14-meter turn radius that is great for both shorter and longer turns. That said, it does feel more comfortable at the stated radius, and that’s okay, it’sa great place to be. By keeping the ski somewhat on the friendly side of the spectrum, Blizzard does progressing skiers a solid by adding a bit of rocker to the tips and tails. While this has more to do with turn initiation and completion rather than soft snow performance, it does open the ski up a bit to degrading conditions throughout the day. If you’re looking for a well-rounded front side shape and profile, the Blizzard Thunderbird Sport Ti is the way to go.
Since most skiers spend most of their time on smooth and groomed terrain, it makes a lot of sense to have equipment that follows suit. For advanced skiers looking to progress into the expert realm, a ski like this is an awesome choice—it has a sophisticated build, some helpful rocker, and a well-rounded shape to make the most out of the front side carving experience.
