DESCRIPTION

The 2027 K2 Mindbender 88 with Salomon Strive 14 GW Bindings is a carving-minded all-mountain ski. Its in-between width carves like it means it on firm snow but still has enough underfoot to drop into trees when the urge hits, and the new Dark Matter construction makes it hook up early and track with real confidence. We paired the Mindbender 88 with the Strive 14 because of this binding’s well known reputation for safety, reliability, and ease of use. Featuring an LDN toe piece that optimizes contact and response, these bindings integrate seamlessly with boots and skis, allowing for a natural flex and balanced stance, making them the perfect choice to pair with this ski.

Why we like it:

K2 tunes the Dark Matter weights differently for every ski in the line, and on the 88 they are pushed toward the tips and tails. That sharpens turn initiation and adds bite at the end of the turn, exactly what you want from a carver.

Who it's for:

Carvers in the advanced-to-expert range who want frontside credentials with enough waist for the occasional trip into softer snow or trees. Skiers stepping up from a pure carving ski to something more versatile will find it an easy transition.

Highlights:

A directional shape with a flatter, more traditional tail is what lets the 88 lock into a carved turn, and a relatively short turn radius makes it quick and snappy edge to edge. Dark Matter weights along the tip and tail edges sharpen turn initiation and add grip out of the turn. Aspen Paulownia in the core keeps the flex light and energetic without giving up resilience, while the Titanal I-Beam down the centerline keeps the ride damp through the bottom of the turn without the dead feel of full sheets. At the core is the three-part heel, which delivers the secure boot retention the Strive line is known for while keeping weight reasonable. Salomon's elastic travel keeps the binding planted through chatter and cut-up snow, so it does not get knocked offline easily. The LDN toe spreads lateral input across an extra-wide pedal for crisp edge-to-edge power transfer, and a sliding toe pedal lets the ski bend underfoot for a more natural flex. The whole assembly rides on a low-profile chassis that drops the stance and centers the skier over the ski. It accepts both standard alpine and GripWalk boot soles, and the binding is TUV certified.

Things to consider:

Float is not its strength, so if you regularly chase soft snow, step up to the 96 or wider. The metal-laminate build is also more demanding than the no-metal Mindbender 90; intermediates who want a friendlier ride should start there.

Fit & sizing considerations:

It runs true to length, so drop a size if you want shorter, snappier carves, otherwise stick with what you usually ride.

A bit more rigid than I used to be but still trying to be dynamic, smooth, and fluid with varying degrees of success. Skis on the snow, these days.

Skied at Pico mainly on firm groomers with a mix of loose and frozen granular.
Did this length feel short, long, or just right? Would you recommend sizing up or down, or does it ski "true to size?" Would you choose this length for yourself?
Felt like a good length, and I would definitely choose it for myself. It's a strong ski so you don't need to go super long.

What's your first impression of this ski? How did it feel?
Compared to the outgoing 89, this new 88 feels a bit less turny but more comfortable at speed and smoother overall. You can make shorter, more skidded turns easier on the 88 and it feels very composed when going fast. Great edge grip!
For what type of terrain would you recommend this ski? Why does it perform well in that terrain?
This is a groomer first ski, but is totally capable of being an off-trail option for those who ski around here in New England or places with generally not deep snow.
What's the appropriate ability level and/or style for this ski? Why is it appropriate for that type of skier?
The Mindbender 88 is better suited to advanced and expert skiers who like speed and need some composure from their skis. I think that an intermediate may feel overpowered here, but that's why they still have the 90C.
Anything else you want to tell us about your experience on these skis?
