If you’re looking to experience a ski with a true race feel, but would rather leave those giant turn radii to the pros, the Redster G9 Revoshock is a perfect ski. This is what we would describe as a consumer GS ski. It doesn’t adhere to FIS standards and it’s available in shorter, more approachable lengths than what you’d see on the World Cup. Aside from the differences in shape and length options, however, the construction and feel is more or less identical to what the best skiers in the world use. In the Redster G9 Revoshock, Atomic uses a Power Woodcore, Titanal laminates, their Ultrawall construction method, and even of course their proprietary Revoshock vibration damping system that you’ve seen on the feet of skiers like Mikaela Shiffrin over the past couple seasons. The longest length is 182 cm, which comes along with a 19 m turn radius. That goes all the way down to 16.6 m in the shortest 167 cm length. For us mere mortals not on the World Cup circuit, those are great radii as they allow for easier GS style turns. You don’t have to bend the ski as much as you do with a longer radius, meaning it’s a little easier to get the ski to come across the fall line and into the next turn. While we might be making it sound like this is an easy-going ski, that would only be in comparison to those World Cup models, as skis like the Redster G9 Revoshock are the real deal.

Mike Anglin has a strong race background and was a great tester for this ski. He opted for that longest 182 cm length, which he thought was “just right.” We essentially got exactly the scores we’d expect from a ski like this, with stability, torsional stiffness/edge grip, and overall impression all reaching the coveted 5 out of 5 mark. Flotation, however, dropped to 2 out of 5, but this ski isn’t designed to float, it’s designed to be powerful and precise on firm snow. “Atomic brought the heat with the Redster G9 Revo. Holy smokestacks. This beast blew my mind. Its personality is very large and loud, but not FIS race ski large. It's all strengths with this one. No weakness at all. Incredibly versatile with its turn shape even with a 19 m radius and can chew up the buffed-out steeps to the mellow cruisers. Advanced intermediates to the World Cup Beer League racer will enjoy these G9s. Loved tipping it up on edge and riding the energy from arc to arc.” We definitely think this would be a great choice as a recreational or “Beer League” race ski. If you don’t have to adhere to FIS standards, chances are you’ll shave quite a bit of time off your race runs with a ski like this rather than trying to fight a longer radius ski. In our local race league here in Stowe, we see a lot of skiers on 24 or 27 m radius skis, and they typically get smoked by those on skis around 19 or 20 m.

Jamie O’Brien also skied the 182 cm length, which he too thought was a great choice for his size and ski ability. Similar to Mike, we got some low scores in criteria you’d likely expect. Flotation was 1 out of 5 and forgiveness 2 out of 5, but stability, torsional stiffness/edge grip, and overall impression once again hit the full 5 out of 5 mark. “This ski is the best at what it’s designed for, frontside cruising to full speed beer league laps. The solid platform gives back everything you give it and then some.” Andrew Ruschp also skied the 182 cm length and his scores practically mirrored Jamie’s, although we saw a lower 1 out of 5 score for versatility as well. That makes sense, as really this ski is designed for ripping groomers and pretty much nothing else. “This ski charged and I could really hammer turns and turned well with varying levels of pressure. Never bottomed out but could also hand light turns.”

If you’re looking for a frontside carver and you want race-like performance, the Redster G9 Revoshock will be an excellent ski for you. If you’re participating in a local race league and you want to get an edge on your competitors, it’s a great choice. The precision and power achieved by this ski is only equalled by other skis in its class, never outdone. On top of that, it does it with Atomic’s famous precision, the same precision that’s helping skiers like Mikaela Shiffrin snags podiums left and right. Will you ski like her? Probably not, okay definitely not, but at least it won’t be the equipment’s fault.
