The 2026 Blizzard Thunderbird R15 82 is a swoled up version of the awesome R15 76, bringing more power and balance to the force. While much of the construction is the same, the new 82 comes with a TPX 12 binding as opposed to the Comp 12 with the stiffer plate. Overall, this doesn’t seem like a huge difference, but we’ve found that it adds energy and pep to the ski while keeping it a bit lighter and more mobile with less of a race-like feel versus the 82 LTD. Now, this is a sturdy carver with power to spare, not that you’d want to leave any performance on the table.

Built with Blizzard’s Trueblend Piste wood core consisting of poplar and beech, these skis are sophisticated from the start. They use longer stringers of beech in the center to balance more poplar along the sides. This creates a smooth and powerful central spine of the ski while the edges are still amenable to varying turn shapes and styles—you are not locked into a turn on these skis but they are certainly firm to the flex. With 2 sheets of metal and active armor in the binding plate, these are meant to be planted in the snow. Tester Bob St.Pierre notes that “these skis were a lot peppier and more energetic than the LTD version with the race plate—I guess that’s to be expected but I was surprised at how much the plate made a difference. Overall, super confident due to the sturdy build, I loved it in somewhat choppy groomers—a total beast.”
The Rocker / Camber / Rocker profile of the 2026 Blizzard Thunderbird 82The number of carving skis at this width is increasing, and for good reason—these things are a lot of fun. It’s nice to have a strong, stiff, and powerful ski with a lot of mass underfoot. That said, they’re not the easiest to use. With measurements of 131/82/112 and a radius of 15-meters in the 175, there’s a lot to consider here. It’s okay to go a bit short here if you want because they’re pretty wide and pretty stiff. Bob continues to state that “the radius is right on point here—works great in mid-range but you can definitely go fast if you want to!” Not a lot of rocker here, but nice round shovels are fine for more versatile skiing.
This is more of an advanced and expert level ski. With good weight, strong flex, and a wide waist for carving, we can’t see many intermediates having much success here. If you’re a strong skier and like a beefy ski with excellent energy, this is the place to be. Ideally suited for groomed and smooth terrain but can cut through crud and chop with ease, the all-new 2026 Blizzard Thunderbird R15 82 is a prime-time ski with carving excellence at the forefront of the conversation.
