2027 Atomic Redster G9

ski test sidebar

When ski racers retire, or when experts feel the need for speed, a ski like the 2027 Atomic Redster G9 materializes. These GS-oriented skis feel a lot like the upper end Atomic race products but aren’t too overpowering that they’re unaccessible for mere mortal skiers. If you’re looking for a longer radius carver that’ll work great in beer league racing, early morning groomers, or technical skiing events, the G9 is ready for the challenge.

Construction
Poplar/Ash Wood Core, Titanal, Carbon, Fiberglass, Sintered Base

Built like the other skis in the Redster line, the G9 uses a Power wood core consisting of poplar and ash to go along with two sheets of metal and steel Revoshock plates. The G9 also uses carbon underfoot to stiffen the middle of the ski for pure power and edge grip. They’re neither light nor flexible, with a stiffer and heftier feel to inspire confidence when it comes to on-trail performance. With a weight of 3219 g/ski in the 176 cm length, this ski and binding setup will not flinch when encountering any type of firm snow. Tester Matt Testa states that his “first impression of this ski was that it felt strong and enjoyable right away. I went in expecting it to be a standout favorite, and while it definitely performed well, I only had the chance to ski it deep loose granular snow. Those variable conditions may have limited its ability to really bite and hold an edge, which likely detracted from how confidently it could carve. After trying other skis in the same category, it didn’t quite rise to the top for me, but it’s still a strong, capable ski, and I’d be interested to see how it performs in firmer conditions. I’d highly recommend the Atomic Redster G9 for firm, hardpack conditions. It’s an excellent choice for skiers with a racing background who want a ski that delivers exceptional edge hold and precision at speed.” We do agree that the race background, or an aspiration, is essential for success here with G9.

The Rocker / Camber / Rocker profile of the 2027 Atomic Redster G9

It’s nice to see a technical skier like Ryan Flanagan get on the G9, as he notes that “The ski initiated easily, but the middle of the turn felt slightly soft compared to the strong tip and tail. It preferred to be carved rather than skidded, and the tail produced noticeable rebound if pressured too early. Overall, the ski felt most comfortable making clean, long-radius carved turns rather than short, quick turns. This ski is best suited for advanced to expert skiers who prefer a carving-oriented style. The ski rewards good pressure management and accurate edge engagement.” A lot of that deals with the shape, which at 67 mm underfoot, is quite narrow. Due to the relatively narrower tips and tails as well, the skis produce a straighter cut, with the 176 generating a 17-meter turn radius. While this isn’t race-like in and of itself, it is relatively longer than other skis in the Redster line.

Quick turning, hang on as they are quite snappy!!
Mark MacDonald

Since these skis have more of a race-like benefit from a performance perspective, they also have that type of lean when it comes to demand and skier type. These are more unique and specific to on-trail carving and on-piste skiing, so there’s not a whole lot of versatility or well-roundedness built in here. These are specific skis for a specific purpose, and that’s fine, as long as your intentions and applications align with that.
