An exciting update for the 2025 season, the best-selling women’s ski to date, the Blizzard Black Pearl 88, is undergoing a revamp with exciting new changes to both the construction and shape. As the theory goes, why change something that doesn’t need to be fixed? This very much applies here, and while the reputable Black Pearl recipe was clearly a success, Blizzard, with inspiration from the popularity of the revised Sheeva/Rustler line, made the decision to upgrade the line. With three different width options- 84, 88, and 94, all-mountain skiers who value predictable performance and versatility in a sharp carving package will welcome the new version with open arms. With hints of freeride, enhanced construction attributes, and greater versatility, the new Black Pearl 88 is sure to attract an even greater following.

Focusing first on the construction alterations, Blizzard took the hint from last year’s remodel of the Sheeva/Rustler line and put a similar technology to use in the Black Pearl line. It’s easy to see when something works and in the case of Fluxform technology, which brought about great success last season, it seemed only logical to incorporate it into another reiteration. With the intent being to invite a more powerful, stable platform, plus a greater handle on the overall flex pattern, the use of metal in three different applications throughout the ski, in combination with Trueblend wood core, really stepped up the level of performance. Using a highly advanced layering system, the construction starts with central stringers of beech wood and outer portions of poplar wood. Underneath this sturdy layer, a carbon-infused pre-preg fiberglass laminate is placed followed by a central strip of the Flux metal. To round it out, another layer of fiberglass laminate and two outer strips of metal along the edges finish off the intricate layering of high-performance materials. Not only does the Flux metal work harmoniously with the beech wood core for dampening purposes, it also creates competitive edge grip and maximum power throughout.
The Rocker / Camber / Rocker profile of the 2025 Blizzard Black Pearl 88Next, we look at the new and improved shape, which invites a more freeride-inspired profile. Whereas the former Black Pearl featured a directional tail with a rockered tip, the new model has significantly more rocker in both the tip and tail, with a flatter profile underfoot. Dimensions remain pretty much the same in the 88, with the 2025 model showing 127.5/88/109.5 mm sidecut in the 164 cm length. Generating a 14-meter turn radius, same as in the 2024 version, the main difference that is noticeable is in the ease at which it initiates a turn, all thanks to the new profile. Tester Allison Ruschp really enjoyed her time on the new Black Pearl 88, saying “finally a black pearl that I liked. In previous years, the black pearl has been a little soft for my liking. It stood its purpose to intermediate skiers and was great for them, but I never found that I could get the edge control that I wanted. They have now added a little metal underfoot that goes a long way in improving the edge control while maintaining the lightweight swing weight of the tips and tails.” Allison’s experience exemplifies precisely what Blizzard was hoping to achieve with the 2025 changes and it’s awesome to see the success.
The Black Pearl 88 has remained leader of the women’s all-mountain ski category for some time now, with the same great build and shape season after season. With 2025 shaking things up, it would come as no surprise if fans had doubts about the new version. However, it’s safe to say the revamp was a major success as all of our testers were blown away by the new build and shape. With more power, stability, and energy, just as many, if not more, skiers of all ability levels will reap the benefits of the new Black Pearl 88.
