The 2027 Blizzard Thunderbird 76 LTD is an awesomely powerful and fun-loving carver that’ll satisfy the needs of many advanced and expert front side skiers. At 76 mm underfoot, this ski is still what we’d consider to be narrow, but when pitted against its more race-like brethren, it’s still pretty wide. A lot of skiers simply enjoy the more balanced standpoint and platform, and it’s as simple as that. If you’re looking for a narrower ski to round out a quiver for dedicated groomer days, this is a fantastic option, and we’ve noted that most days here in Vermont would be well spent on a Thunderbird 76. Now with wider skis to bookend this 76, it separates itself as the narrower of the T-Birds, and even more carving focused. Even so, it’s got the feel of a race ski even with a wider bodied platform.

We get quite a sophisticated and sturdy build here with the Thunderbird 76. Blizzard’s use of TrueBlend Piste wood core works great here, blending stringers of beech and poplar. The beech is longer in the central chord of the ski providing true tip to tail stability. As you get closer to the sides, the poplar becomes more popular, adding a slightly more forgiving flex and a lighter feel. This is a very sophisticated way of building a ski and it totally comes through on the snow. Blizzard then adds two layers of titanal to the ski for power and smoothness. This ski feels rock-solid on a variety of conditions and terrain. Tester Sam Reed notes: “I was really impressed with these - they are stable, confidence-inspiring, and seemingly have no speed limit. They aren't wildly versatile in terms of turn shape, but if you're aiming for GS turns they are happy as can be.” There’s some versatility here for sure. Skis of this build and shape make a lot of sense for people looking for strong carving and a bit of approachability. Another construction technique they use is the Active Carbon Armor that provides a downward pressure in front of and behind the binding zone for pure edge grip and confidence. When you set your edge, expect proper feedback. As Sam continues to note: “These felt like being on rails—hard to get them to deviate from the path but incredibly stable if you stick to the line.”

The width of the platform in these skis make them so darn appealing. The 174 produces a 15-meter turn radius, and for the most part, the ski likes to stick to that arc. Benny Wax states that the skis are "fast, quick, and lively! On firm hard back after a solid freeze, these skis didn’t miss a beat!” The ski does have the mix of firm front side and narrow all-mountain to help take skiers to the next level. There’s a slight rocker in the tips, about 2mm. It’s not a lot to help with flotation; it assists in turn initiation and ease of use. The best part of the shape is that it’s very carve-oriented but also wide for balance. Former racer Luke Miller notes the ski’s “exceptional edge hold and ability to handle speed well even with poor conditions.”

There’s quite a big audience here as the Thunderbird 76 handles aggressive skiing while also being amenable to more moderate paces. If it doesn’t snow, then go right ahead and reach for this ski—just playing the percentages; it’ll be a great choice more often than not.
