2024 Men's Narrow Twin Tip Ski Comparison Lead Image

2024 Men's Narrow Twin Tip Ski Comparison Ski Comparison

NOVEMBER 22, 2023 | WRITTEN BY Bob St.Pierre

In the second of our twin-tip comparison series, we’re focusing on the narrower end, with skis ranging from 84 to 96 mm underfoot. In this range, we’re seeing more of a focus on park and slopestyle competition performance, rather than a blurring into the freeride realm. From rails and jumps to pipe and groundwork, skis in this range feature more symmetry, modern profiles, and increased mobility over the wider twins on which we previously focused. In that light, if you’re a skier that’s more park-driven from a competition standpoint, skis on this list will align better with what you’re looking to accomplish. That said, some skis on this list are very much still ingrained into the all-mountain realm, and many are fantastic in bumps, trees, and on the groomers. Basically, the more symmetrical the ski, the more skewed it is towards competitive slopestyle and half pipe performance.

Overview:

While some of the skis on this list skew to the modern and progressive side of the spectrum, the Head Oblivion 84 is quite traditional in nature. There’s a lot of camber, a thick and robust vertical sidewall construction, minimal/zero taper, and a heavier weight that leads to a sturdy overall character. This feels like a real ski in ways that nothing else on this list really does. Maybe Poacher, but that may be it. The fact that it’s on the narrow side is also very impressive, keeping pure competition performance squarely in its sights. With great camber comes great responsiveness, and it seems like Head is also bringing much of their race construction into this ski as well. There’s a different overall quality going on here, and it’s all due to Head’s commitment to making some of the best all-around skis on the planet, with this twin tip being the beneficiary of all the great technology and progress over the years.

Who it's For:

Traditional or dare I say “Old School” style skiers who know and prefer the feeling of camber underfoot and a more solid build.

Overview:

With a few new graphics offerings for 2024, the Revolt 86 stays relevant, even though it hasn’t changed structurally for a number of years now. That’s fine in our book, as the Revolt 86 has always been an impressive performer with a huge range of styles and applications. This ski features Volkl’s multilayer wood core, but uses a cap in the front and back with sidewall underfoot. This gives the ski an uncanny mix of durability, quickness, and edge grip that not a lot of other skis in this range, price or otherwise, have to offer. Even as a bigger skier, I was very impressed with the energy and snap that you get out of this ski, and it makes sense not only in the park, but also in an all-mountain format. You can definitely ski this as a competition ski, or as a daily driver—the choice is yours and any way you choose you’ll be rewarded with the Revolt 86’s amazing compliance and capabilities.

Who it's For:

Park skiers and all-mountain enthusiasts alike. You value quickness edge to edge but don’t want to feel like you’re skiing on a feather.

Overview:

As the narrowest of the Bent series, the 85 has some unique construction properties as well. While some skiers may find the 90 to be on the light or flexible side, the 85 and its less sophisticated build actually make it denser and more rugged. By using a blend of densolite and composite wood in the core, the Bent 85 is sturdier than the 90, even though it is seen as the “lower” of the skis when it comes to performance. We have found this ski to be not only a great value, but also a very utilitarian product. You can really kick this thing around and beat the crap out of it and it just doesn’t seem to care. While the performance is blockier than in some of the other skis on this list, there’s a whole lot of skiers out there that will benefit from this style over all others.

Who it's For:

Lots of skiers, from tweeners up to progressing adult park skiers. You are not looking to spend a ton of money and want some durability to accompany the performance.

Overview:

What would a twin tip comparison be without a Faction? The Prodigy 1 continues the line of strong freestyle performance twin tips that are seen at slopestyle and halfpipe competitions all across the world. Built with a mix of poplar and ash in the wood core, the skis are mixed between dense and powerful wood and lighter and poppier feels. As a result, you’re getting both the high and and the low when it comes do strength and agility. Faction also includes their 2.5mm edges, keeping the skis tough and durable when it comes to rails and urban features. On a few different levels, there’s some good taper here, both in tip and tails as well as tips to tails. The 8 mm drop in width from tip to tail is on the directional side of the spectrum while the spoonier shape keeps creative skiing and fun-loving groundwork firmly at the forefront of the ski’s character.

Who it's For:

Freestyle purists who know that Faction makes one heck of a twin tip. You want something that competition ready at any point in time.

Overview:

While many skis on this list flirt with the symmetrical, the Helix 88 is married to it. With a thick core profile and a perfectly symmetrical shape and build, this ski has pure park written all over it. Liberty has been known for making skis in the freestyle and freeride realm for quite some time, so it makes sense that they use all available technology to make an incredibly freestyle-oriented ski like Helix 88. Whether you’re in the park or pipe, these skis can hold up to the toughest tricks and bigger airs that can possibly be found. By using bamboo, poplar, and carbon in this ski, Liberty is able to fine tune the silent and stable nature to create something totally predictable and very confidence inspiring. There’s a lot of underfoot camber here as well, with minimal tip and tail rocker. There’s decent splay, but not a whole lot, making switch takeoffs and landings a total breeze.

Overview:

Built like a brick and ready for action, the K2 Sight is an 88 mm underfoot twin with a lot of splay and a hefty build. This ski is competition ready for a wide range of skiers, from the young guns of tomorrow to the progressing adults who are looking for a durable and predictable ski for any and all park and pipe skiing. There’s not a whole lot of taper drop leading to a more symmetrical than average shape, but the amount of splay means that switch takeoffs and landings are firmly within this ski’s wheelhouse. Built with an aspen wood core and K2’s triaxial fiberglass braiding system, there’s a good amount of adhesive going on here, and while that does add heft to the mix, it also keeps it very satisfying. You don’t have to use these in the park or pipe, but they’re a lot happier in that zone.

Overview:

Even without Tom Wallisch as a pro model to influence a ski, Line would still make fantastic twin tips. The fact that they have this elite athlete putting his signature on the TW Pro makes it all the more exciting. It’s almost symmetrical, with measurements of 118/90/116, so the purity of freestyle and park performance is fully intact. Line also does a fantastic job when using maple in their skis. Think of a maple sapling. It’s very pliable yet does not break. This is the kind of character that the maple creates flows directly into the personality of the TW Pro. For groundwork, ollies, nollies, and butters, these skis are about as good as it gets. We also get carbon olliebands in the ski to add stiffness in the underfoot zone, but for all intents and purposes, this is a full-on park ski that is competition ready and amazing on rails and in slopestyle formats.

Competitive and competent freestyle competitors who are looking for a great blend of creativity and smoothness.

Overview:

As the competition model in the Volkl lineup, the Revolt 90 is now in its second year of slopestyle dominance. With a symmetrical build and shape paired with modern freestyle technology, especially in terms of taper, the Revolt 90 is a unique ski that holds up to the highest levels of park and pipe skiing. The early taper boosts the multi-layer wood core that Volkl mates with their race base to create a high-quality ski that can handle high speeds, big jumps, and strong landings. The sidewall is also interesting in that it tapers down twice from full wall to half, and then to minimal. This gives the ski a very predictable and smooth flex from tip to tail. Symmetrically shaped, built, and profiled, the Revolt 90 is equally at home going forwards as it is backwards, allowing for serious and playful slopestyle skiing all at the same time.

Who it's For:

Mainly slopestyle competitors due to the symmetry and central mount point, but that doesn’t mean it’s inaccessible for others.

Overview:

One of the more complete 90mm twin tips on the wall, the Captis has a wonderful build and range, appealing to a broad set of skiers who are doing everything from full park to no park and everything in between. While using a fairly simple poplar wood core with fiberglass laminates, the Captis has a lot of pop and snap for such a seemingly basic build. There’s a great combination of energy, grip, and flexibility for all-mountain skiing and at the same time, the ski definitely has more of a dedicated twin tip shape for any and all freestyle capabilities. You could easily use this as a park only ski, and if you do, you’ll be rewarded with high quality and a sturdy build. This thing is great in the bumps and trees as well, with the more traditional underfoot camber and the floaty tips and tails. The versatility is the high point here, and the fact that they do it at a high level of performance is all the more impressive.

Who it's For:

Pretty good skiers who have a pretty good idea of what they’re looking for. You want a higher-end twin tip that features many positive attributes.

Overview:

Built with an energetic paulownia wood core and fiberglass torsion box technology, the Dynastar M-Free 90 is an incredibly responsive ski that’s a bit stiffer than you may infer. Similar to the Bent 85, the M-Free 90 can also be placed in the tweener department by offering this ski in a huge range of sizes from 137 to 177, satisfying the needs of a whole lot of different skiers. These skis are light, relatively stiff, and insanely useful for all types of skiing ranging from park and pipe to bumps and trees. Since the weight is kept down, they’re adept at quick turns and agility all while keeping the park performance fully intact. Even though there’s a lot of sizes here, the skis themselves are very reactive and high level, especially for those that don’t need a whole lot of ski underfoot.

Small, medium, and large skiers who value precision, reactivity, and versatility at a lighter weight.

Overview:

And another Faction! This time we’re dealing with more symmetry, more pure park and slopestyle performance, and a bit lighter of a build. With measurements of 120/90/120, this ski is identical from back to front and front to back. It’s built with a full poplar wood core, a full carbon weave, and a carbon/rubber stomp bad underfoot. These additional materials go a long way in making the Studio 1 a great product for hitting huge jumps and landing big tricks as well as bolstering the ski from a durability standpoint. Chances are, these skis are going to get put to the test. This construction, combined with a rugged topsheet and 2.5mm steel edges make the Studio 1 feel like a tank, but a maneuverable one. Current and future competitive freestyles skiers who are looking for that symmetrical build in their park skis will gravitate quickly to the Faction Studio 1.

Overview:

Light, flexible, and eternally versatile, the Atomic Bent 90 is a fantastic choice for a huge array of skiers, from true all-mountain and mogul enthusiasts all the way through competitive park skiers. Built with a simple wood core and a half-cap design, the tips and tails of the ski are very light and thin. Underfoot, there’s some grip, but we’re not thinking anyone’s touting these as great carvers, especially on the feet of heavier skiers. What you are getting, though, is an amazing tree and bump ski that can also hold its own in the park. The splay isn’t too dramatic, but it is bolstered by more flex in the ends. Thanks to Atomic’s HRZN tech in those regions, the ski is a really good floater—likely one of the best on this list—and that makes it appealing for those that want to mix up where and how they see and ski the mountain.

Fun-loving skiers who are looking to blend all-mountain fun with some park here and there. This ski falls more into the creative freeride division more than freestyle focus.

Overview:

Another new ski on the wall, the 2024 Elan Playmaker 91 is the narrower version of the 101, offering carbon-powered technology to go along with surfy and smeary freeride creativity. Like the Bent 90, it’s on the light side for pure park performance, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be done. Basically, you can put these skis wherever you want with ease and confidence and that includes the park, pipe, and rails. While the Ripstick series of skis uses full carbon tubes to access the energy, the Playmaker uses underfoot tubes. This makes the shovels and tails more amenable to manipulation in a playful manner while you’re still getting strong edge grip and carving performance mainly in the underfoot zone of the ski. Elan’s Surf Rocker construction and profile keeps the ends of the skis playful and smeary while the middle of the ski has more of a trapezoidal sidewall shape to it. This mixes between grippy and smeary from tip to tail quite effectively.

Who it's For:

Skiers who prefer a lighter twin tip. You want supreme mobility and agility while keeping underfoot grip squarely in the conversation.

Overview:

Line’s new Chronic 94 features a lot more diversity and versatility than the outgoing Chronic 95, adding in Line’s new concepts of thick and thin when it comes to construction and shape. Thin Tip is the big difference here, as Line really lowers the swing weight by taking the tips and tails down to the bare bones of existence. Underfoot, though, the aspen core is a lot thicker, giving this ski some much more serious chops when it comes to carving performance and edge hold. It’s a full-sidewall, so mainly a very real ski, and this makes a lot of sense given the mix of park and all-mountain performance that this ski is capable of handling. As far as skis on this list are concerned, the Chronic 94 is one of the most freeride oriented with a lot of rocker and splay throughout. Thick bases and edges increase both the on-trail and on-rail performance here, allowing strong and aggressive skiers the ability to charge hard through any type of conditions or terrain.

A wide array of skiers looking for the latest in modern twin tip freeride technology.

164, 172, 180 cm15 m @ 172 cm121 / 94 / 116.5 mm1,950 g @ 180 cmFlexibility, Creativity, Symmetry

Overview:

As one of the pro model skis on this list, the BDog takes Phil Casabon’s technical skills and imports them directly into the ski. This ski promotes creativity, groundwork, butters, presses, rails, urban settings, and beyond. By using Phil’s Circle Flex technology, the incredibly flexible tips and tails are rounder than the rest of the ski, resulting in more surface area for creative skiing. This dramatic shaping puts the BDog into rare air when it comes to freestyle performance, basically taking any type of all-mountain versatility out of the equation. That’s fine, and since this is a very specific ski for a very specific skier, it’s got to stand out in its uniqueness. While not fully symmetrical, it’s pretty close, with only a 5 mm drop in taper from tip to tail. At 94 mm underfoot, there’s some good stability here for larger tricks, and the 15-meter turn radius is certainly on the progressive side of the spectrum.

Who it's For:

Dedicated park skiers who lean to the creative and technical side of things. You value the same things as Phil when it comes to rails, jumps, and features.

Overview:

Thanks to a new build and a new shape, the Armada ARV 94 is something different than the outgoing 96 for sure but keeps a lot of the same overall characteristics fully intact. This updated construction consists of a caruba wood core with ash underfoot rather than the ash extending through the ski. This does a few things. Within Armada’s line, it now is separated more from the Edollo when it comes to heft allowing Armada to have both lighter and heavier twin tips. For the ski itself, the more flexible and flickable nature of the ski makes it easier than the 96 was when it comes to creative groundwork and mobility through the air. Purists may say it takes away from the on-trail and all-mountain aspect of the ski, and while they’re not wrong, there’s still a lot of pop and energy out of this ski in a carved turn. W3dgewall technology incorporates a pre-poured sidewall into the core of the ski and the whole thing is pressed together for increased durability and cohesion.

Overview:

While you may think that the Oblivion 94 is simply a 10mm wider version of the 84, the reality is much different. The 94 adds freeride and all-mountain flair to the general shape by adding flexibility and more progressive shaping. The 94 is still very minimalistic when it comes to taper, but there’s noticeably more rocker in the ski than the 84. This keeps it still in the traditional realm, but moves it slightly closer to progressive. Another aspect of the traditional nature of the ski is the longer turn radius. At 22.8-meters in the 184, this ski is a straight shooter but the flex allows for true accessibility of the arc. Park performance does not take a hit, as the 94 balances a wider and more stable platform with a lighter and thinner core profile. This blend of attributes helps not only with the slopestyle acumen, but also the all-mountain versatility of the ski.

Overview:

With a bit stiffer of a build than the Sight 88, the Poacher 96 has more of an all-mountain and freeride flair than its narrower counterpart. Built with the same Aspen wood core and Triaxial fiberglass braiding, the Poacher also adds vertical carbon stringers to the mix to stiffen the ski even further and add responsiveness to the mix. The main difference here is the shape and profile, with the Poacher having a flatter overall look to it with lower splay and camber. This makes it more versatile in an all-mountain standpoint, and the ski actually carves pretty darn well as a result. Make no mistake, this is also a full-on competition ski when it comes to slopestyle, as evidenced by Colby Stevenson and other athletes success on this ski in top-level events. The mid-90's is a great place to be for any ski, but we’ve always loved the twin tips in this category most of all, and the K2 Poacher is right up there with the best of them.

Overview:

A new Revolt for 2024, the 96 picks up where the ever loved 95 leaves off. While the added 1mm of width doesn’t make a huge difference, the shape change certainly does. With more taper, splay, and a sturdier build, the Revolt 96 is an all-mountain ripper disguised as a park ski. There could be arguments on both sides as to which way this ski leans, but we’ve found it to be equally adept at making clean, deep, and round turns on groomers as it is tearing it up through the park. They’re flexible enough to access the entirety of the sidecut, resulting in very rewarding carved turns. At the same time, the durability and stability of the skis are off the charts, and any time you give us a mid-90's twin tip to enjoy, we’re going to take full advantage. The ski is a bit on the heavy side, but for stronger and more aggressive skiers, that’s a very good thing, especially if you spend a decent amount of time in an all-mountain or freeride format.
