The Atomic Maverick 88 Ti has provided a new, refreshing, alternative choice in the ~90 mm all-mountain category. Now entering its second season, it utilizes metal laminates in its construction and provides a powerful feel while also remaining light, maneuverable, and fun. Atomic uses their Omatic core construction: a lightweight wood core paired with thin metal laminates. The 184 cm length in the Maverick 88 TI hits an impressive 1800 g weight, which is noticeably lighter than most skis in this category that use metal. We get an All Mountain Rocker profile with a little bit longer tip rocker compared to tail rocker. The tip also features Atomic’s HRZN Tech, which boosts the ski’s overall performance in soft snow, allowing for easier turn initiation and a little more float too. Through two years of testing now, we’ve found the Maverick 88 Ti feels stronger than you’d expect if you just look at that weight figure, but provides plenty of quickness too.

Rick Randall was most impressed by its stability and edge grip, but also touched on the ski’s fun factor and approachability. Rick went for the 184 cm length for his testing, which happens to be the longest available length for the Maverick 88 Ti. “Kinda blown away by this ski. This thing rips! Atomic has always made skis that have great edge hold (torsional strength). What impressed me was that this ski would start a carve at lower speeds vs some other skis with metal that you're 3 turns down the hill before the ski bends. Slow and fast, this thing is super stable and rails turns on edge and also was easy to maneuver for slashing and skidding some turns. Best in test of the skis I tested. Definitely getting one of these next year!” We always love when our testers point out that they’re planning on buying a pair for themself! We also love Rick’s description of how the ski can adapt to different speeds. We couldn’t agree more that some skis with metal construction feel like they need to hit high speeds before they really do anything. We think Atomic did a great job with the Maverick 88 Ti in the sense that it can handle those higher speeds and aggressive skiing, but doesn’t need to go super fast to feel responsive and rewarding. Rick’s fondness was reflected in his scores. 5 out of 5 marks for stability, quickness/maneuverability, torsional stiffness/edge grip, and overall impression. While he didn’t focus on it in his written feedback, that top score for quickness/maneuverability really highlights the versatility of this ski.

Dave Hatoff found plenty of power and stability in the Maverick 88 Ti as well. Interestingly, Dave went for the 169 cm length, which he thought was “a bit short.” Regardless, it didn’t seem to affect his experience. “Stable, powerful and stiff. A lot of heft in this ski’s build, it remains more approachable than some. Nice edge grip. For advanced and expert skiers. A light weight ski that skis like a heavyweight." We think that’s a perfect way to describe it. It feels light on your feet, but has a lot of properties typically found in heavier skis. Brad Schauerman went for the 184 cm length, which he thought was just right for him. That’s interesting, as Brad can often be found on slightly shorter skis. Valuable feedback here, as if you feel like you’re in between sizes, don’t worry too much about going with the longer option. Almost full 4 out of 5 scores across the board from Brad, with just flotation dropping to 3 out of 5. That’s a strong indication of a highly versatile all-mountain ski. “Fun ski, though I think I like the wider versions better. Super quick and maneuverable in all sorts of conditions and variable snow. Holds an edge well on the hard pack too. Snappy and fun.” It’s okay, Brad, you’re allowed to like the wider models more. To each their own! We still appreciate your feedback on the Maverick 88 Ti, however. Quick, maneuverable, snappy, fun, and holds an edge well too. That’s a fantastic summary of the Maverick 88 Ti.

If you’re shopping in the ~90 mm all-mountain category, it can often be pretty overwhelming. Basically every manufacturer makes at least one, and often two or three, skis that fall into this category. Sometimes it makes sense to go with the lightest, more maneuverable ski for your skiing style. Sometimes it makes sense to go with the stiffer, heavier models if you like to ski fast and aggressively. Often, however, it’s most beneficial to get a ski with a wide range of performance characteristics that you can take just about anywhere on the mountain without worry, and the Maverick 88 TI is a perfect example of that type of ski.
